Custom Options for Servo Drives and Servo Motors

We offer a wide variety of standard servo drives and servo motors. If a standard product does not suffice, we also offer custom designs. Often times your unique system requirements can be achieved with a simple electrical, mechanical, or software modification which leads to an extremely short development cycle.

Servo motors and servo drives are just one small but important part of larger, complex electrical and mechanical systems. We know that every application is unique and that they require special considerations. Many customers have sent us these larger systems to analyze, and then worked with our engineering team to setup and tune their system as a whole. Oftentimes, this is the most efficient way to maximize performance. If the situation requires it, we can even send an engineer into the field to optimize or troubleshoot your system. At the end of the day, our team is committed to your success.

Custom Servo Drive Options
Operation from non-standard voltages
Our standard products are optimized to operate off of common VAC line voltages or their VDC equivalent. However, if you application demands a particular voltage, let us know, and we will design a drive tailored to that voltage.
Modifications to mechanical packages
The most common modifications are to the mounting hole pattern and mounting surface.
Compatibility with special feedback devices
Each of our lines of servo drives accept feedback from a variety of feedback devices. However, if you don’t see your device listed, please contact us with your device’s specifications. We are constantly adding compatibility to new devices and protocols and we are also willing to develop new technology to meet your needs.
Current loop bandwidth and PWM frequency
Each of our drives has a standard current loop bandwidth and PWM frequency. However, depending on the motor’s inductance, resistance, and the system’s inertia, that might not be the best choice. Let us know the details of your system, and we will tweak your drive to perform at its best.
Factory tuning of the mechanical assembly
Sometimes the best way to ensure peak performance is to send us a system to evaluate. Our experienced engineers and technicians will test, analyze, and tune the system to your specifications.
Modifications to communication protocols/control interfaces
In some cases, standard communication protocols/control interfaces are limiting. If additional data transmission or tweaks to the protocol are required, contact us with your requirements.
Point-to-point motion profiles without an external controller (Profile Generator feature)
If your application involves a single-axis and a point-to-point motion, Glentek’s Profile Generator feature could possibly work instead of a controller. The Profile Generator feature lets a user program a sequence of steps to be performed by the drive and also incorporates I/O as triggers.
Custom Servo Motor Options
Custom windings for specific BEMFs
Selecting the right motor for your application can be a balancing act between the required torque, speed, and available current from your drive. While we offer several different BEMFs for each frame size and stack length, we can design and build motors with a specific BEMF tailored to your application.
Shaft modifications
Our standard shafts are offered in a variety inch, metric, or NEMA sizes. Common modifications include specific diameters, lengths, tapers, threads, crossholes, or profiles. The standard material is 4140 alloy steel, which has been stress-relieved, hardened, and ground. However stainless steel can also be used.
Front flange modifications
Similar to shafts, our standard front flanges are offered in a variety of inch, metric, or NEMA sizes. That includes the pilot diameter, mounting holes and bolt circle pattern and the standard material is aluminum. All can be customized to the application, and steel or stainless steel can be used.
Connectors/leads
We offer several standard types of connectors and pinouts. If you need to use a connector that we do not offer, let us know the manufacturer and their part/model number. Pinouts can also be customized. Connectors/leads are typically located at the rear end of the motor, but they can be oriented straight out of the back, at a right angle, closer to the front flange, or even coming out of the front flange itself.
Feedback device selection
Standard feedback devices include incremental encoders, absolute encoders, Hall sensors, resolvers, and analog tachometers in a number of resolutions, voltages, and interfaces. If you need to use a feedback device that we do not offer, let us know the manufacturer and their part/model number. More likely than not, we will be able to incorporate it into a design.
Appearance
Our standard motors are painted with a rugged black paint, or for some of our larger frame size brushless motors, black anodized. If you would like a different color or coating process, let us know. Powder coating is also an option. If you would like to paint them yourself, we can just use a coat of primer.
Non-standard stack lengths
Each frame size motor comes in a number of different stack lengths. Intermediate stack lengths or smaller stack lengths may be possible. If you have strict length limitations let us know and we will find the best motor for your needs.
Additional sealing options
Except for GM2300 series motors, all of our motors feature o-ring or gasket sealing between the various parts of the motor. Shaft seals are also standard for all but the smallest motors we offer. For motors with shaft seals, IP65 sealing is standard, for those without, IP54. However, there are other sealing options available, such as v-ring seals. On the opposite side of the spectrum, we have also designed motors that required extra cooling and venting.
Bearing selection
The standard bearing option for our motors are sealed, permanently lubricated, deep-groove ball bearings. Depending on the application other types of bearings might be better, such as shielded bearings or angular contact ball bearings. For demanding applications, bearing selection is an important thing to consider.
